Resume Tips After Being Fired From Your Last Position

You lost your last job. You made a mistake. You just didn't get along with the human resource manager. No matter what happened, if you were fired from a job, your next job application is going to need to include some information about this position. You don't want the next hiring manager to think badly of you or pass you up for someone else. What do you do? It's possible to craft your resume in such a way as to make yourself look like a good hire even if you were fired from your last position.

Resume Tips to Use

To do so, be sure to shine your resume with these tips. However, keep in mind that it is never a good idea to lie about any position, any reason for leaving, or any other aspect of your resume. These resume tips will help you to still come out on top, though.

1. Start with qualifications rather than listing employers. In fact, the modern resume should always focus on the qualifications you have for a job rather than on the people you've worked with. Allow your job skills to be the main component of any application.

2. There's no need for your resume to reflect your termination as such. Rather, you can and should only list years that you've worked at the location rather than dates. The hiring manager will not know or need to know why you left your previous job. It could be that the company downsized or that the job was in transition.

3. Don't ignore the job skills and accomplishments you had at that position. There's no reason to even hide the job in your history. It is a good idea, on the other hand, to focus on the good things you did there and what you accomplished. That's what the hiring manager wants to know anyway.

When it comes for including references, don't do it unless they ask for it. You never want to use a reference that is going to give you a bad representation, though. Focus on those who may be able to provide you with a good level of recommendation, such as a supervisor you did get along with or a co-worker who can vouch for your successes.

Getting fired from a job can be an incredible challenge for anyone. No matter why it happened, you can polish your resume to help you to get your next job without actually communicating that you were terminated.
