3 Ways You Are Screwing Up Your Job Search

Are you responsible for your job search not going the way it should be? Perhaps you've spent a good amount of time applying for jobs, interviewing for positions and even navigating every single job board you could and have come to the conclusion that you just can't find a job. It could be that you are screwing up your own job search. Don't think it's happening? These are some common signs you are.

#1 - Your References Aren't Signing Your Praises

One of the most common mistakes job seekers are doing is handing out references thinking that no one will actually call them. The problem is, they do call, and when your job references are not giving you a good review, you end up missing the call back for a job interview. Ensure your references are doing everything they can to make you look good.

#2 - Your Resume Is Hard to Read

Is the font too small? Perhaps you are presenting blocks and blocks of information but not really making it easy to read. That could be costing you a job interview, too. Break the text up instead. You'll want to clean it up with a moderate sized font that's pretty normal. Nothing too fancy here. Be sure to use bolding for subheadings and for things you want to stand out. Make the interviewer's job easy.

#3 - You Are Not Applying Enough

A common mistake you don't know you are making in your job search is not applying enough. Yes, it is hard work. Yes, you should customize every cover letter to make sure that it fits the job posting specifically. However, you don't want to spend too much time redoing your resume. In other words, you have to put the time into the tasks that are going to be worth the money to you, or in this case, the job interview. Get a great resume together, create a form letter that you can use as a template for cover letters that you can customize and then apply.

Don't put too much time into what you are not getting right now. Rather, work on improving your skills and keeping your head up. You may be responsible for your own job search failing if you are making any of these mistakes. There's good news, though. You can often avoid most of these mistakes by simply putting some effort into the process. You'll get the job interview and even land the position.
